Natural Wonder
PHILOSOPHY LENS
BY GRAYSON JONES
This photo was taken in Granite Falls. There is a debate about whether nature photography is considered art or simply capturing a moment in nature. The premise for the latter argument is that nature isn’t art because it is not man-made or a deliberate attempt at creative expression. However, in the capturing of nature, many aspects of the scene being photgraphed are subject to the photographer’s preferences: lighting, angles, exposure, saturation, etc. In this way, there is a man-made aspect as well as deliberate creative expression. If this makes the photograph art, the only remaining question would be to what extent does a photo of nature need to be edited to be considered art?
